What weight division did BJ Penn and Machida fight in?

When I learned these two fought each other I was perplexed. Machida a legitimate 205er, and Penn rather soft, but extremely dangerous at 170 I can’t imagine Penn fighting at 185 nor Machida at 185 or lower..??

So was this fight a huge weight mismatch? I don’t think Pride sanctioned their fight, but I know in Pride often light heavy weights would fight legitimate heavy weights.
"Kick in the Face" <EDIT>?
"titou" cool visuals. Thanks!

I knew Penn beat Matt Hughes for the welterweight belt some years back, but thought he quickly lost it back to him, well before gaining the Lw championship in a gory fashion.

The only fighter I can think of that held simultaneous title is "HENDO"(pride)

Possibly Couture, can’t remember, I know he was Lhw champ, and multiple time HW champ, at the same time, I’m not sure.?

Heavyweight (!). Penn actually weighed about 180, Machida 205 according to:

Penn normally fights at 155-lightweight, and Machida at 205 light heavyweight, Penn was around 180 I think for their fight, I’m sure it was some kind of open weight fight with no kind of championship implications.

It was an openweight fight, meaning that all fighters fought with no regard for weight class. In the UFC, Machida is a light heavyweight (205 pounds), whereas Penn is a lightweight (155 pounds).

The fight took place at K-1′s HERO’s, which is a Japanese MMA promotion. Penn weighed in at about 185 whereas Machida weighed in at around 215.

Penn has shown that he loves challenges, even if it requires fighting up a weight class (or several). Penn was a legitimate welterweight before making the cut to lightweight in the UFC. He is the only fighter in the UFC to hold the title in 2 weight classes at the same time. He will try to do it again on Saturday at UFC 94 against welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

They fought at heavyweight division. Some believe, Penn actually won the fight.

I don’t think he held two belts at the same time though.

Yeah I’m sorry “Kick in the face”

Bj never held two belts at the same time. It’s never been done in the UFC. That’s why there making such a big deal of this fight. He could be the first man ever to hold 2belts simultaneously in the UFC
